Description

Sudha Arunachalam, NYU Steinhardt presents:

"How children learn words that denote events from their linguistic context"

Lexical acquisition in the preschool years is a protracted process, but is also surprisingly fast. Different kinds of word meanings require children to use different learning mechanisms. For words that denote events--which often have more abstract meanings, with more complex linguistic representations than words that denote objects--children can make use of the linguistic context in which the word appears. I will present experimental work on how this ability develops through the preschool years and how it might be shaped by the properties of the language being acquired as well as the syntactic and semantic properties of the target word.
