Panel Discussion of US/Middle East Conference on Photonics with Alp (SESAME Project), Alù (CUNY), Capasso Harvard), Engheta (Penn), Segev (Technion).

This panel at the Graduate Center is a portion of the US/Middle East Conference on Photonics that will be held from November 4-6, 2019. Aside from this public session at the Graduate Center, scientific sessions will be held at the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC).

The aim of the panel and conference is to foster stronger scientific contacts and engagement between US, European, and Middle Eastern scientists and between scientists across the Middle East. The spirit of the conference was expressed by Hatice Altug, who wrote: “It is indeed inspiring to use the power of science and scientific curiosity to bring people together irrespective of their background, gender or race.” The conference has attracted the very best scientists in the field of photonics and in this regard is a celebration of the importance of the Photonics Initiative of the ASRC. The conference will host an early-career scientist symposium and a poster session. A delegation of editors from the Nature family of journals and the American Physical Society will attend the conference. Having this open discussion advertised through the signage in the elevator and on the monitors at the Graduate Center is evidence of the commitment of the Graduate Center to open discussion and academic freedom.
