Description

Join us for an evening celebrating the new Segal Center Publication: a collection of  traditional Karagöz Turkish shadow puppet theatre in English translation, edited and translated by Marvin Carlson and Nazlı Miraç Ümit. Turkish puppeteer Ayhan Hulagu and his Washington based Karagöz Theatre Company will perform excerpts from the plays.

Ayhan Hulagu’s acquaintance with traditional Turkish arts, and specifically Karagöz, started in high school years. He founded the theatre group Hayal Perdesi Oyuncuları in 2005 at Pamukkale University (PAU) in Turkey, where he also launched the PAU Theatre Festival. His work has been shown in Washington, D.C., Miami, Iowa, Virginia, Minnesota, Maryland and in New York. Hulagu has performed at Great Plains Puppet Train, National Puppet Festival and La MaMa Puppet Slam, among other U.S and Europen venues. His show The Forest of the Witch is a modern interpretation of Karagoz classic by Muhittin Sevilen. Dream of Hamlet is a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in traditional Turkish shadow theatre. Hulagu made history as the first artist to introduce the 700 years old Karagöz shadow puppet character to Broadway.
