Join us for an update on the situation for theatre artists in Brazil.
Roberta Estrela D’Alva
is a director, actress-MC, playwright, spoken word artist, slammer, activist and researcher. With a BA in Performing Arts at the University of São Paulo and Doctorate degree in Communication and Semiotics at PUC/SP (Catholic University of São Paulo). Founding member of the Núcleo Bartolomeu de Depoimentos (first Brazilian Hip-Hop Theater company) and the collective Frente 3 de Fevereiro (transdisciplinary collective that investigates racism in Brazilian society). Co-directed and wrote the screenplay for the documentary “Zumbi Somos Nós” (We are Zumbi) that participated in the Brazil: An Anthology for Brazilian Video Art at the Tate Modern, London. She was the co-author for the video art A Imagem do Som: Futebol (The Image of Sound: Soccer) shown at the Casa de Culturas do Mundo (Houses of Cultures of the World) in Berlin and at the 15º Festival. Roberta is the creator and slammaster at ZAP! Zona autônoma da Palavra (Autonomous Word Zone) the first “poetry slam” (poetry championship) in Brazil, and was a finalist at the Slam Poetry World Cup 2011 in Paris, finishing in third place.
Brazilian playwriter, responsible for the production of fifteen plays performed in Brazil (including Sete, Bonita, Kaim, Revoltar, Iyalodês and Black Brecht – What if Brecht was Black?), and read in Europe. Playwriting professor at the “Escola Livre de Teatro de Santo André” and art educator at the “Fábricas de Cultura” responsible for the social project “Espetáculo” located in the Brasilândia neighborhood. Publisher of four books: Dramaturgias do Front; Dramaturgia Negra. Maratona de Dramaturgia; Tempos Impuros. Represented Brazil in the worldwide event of celebration of the International Day of the Portuguese Language hosted at Greece in May of 2019. Held a lecture at the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Studied journalism in the Metodista University of São Paulo.

The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center is proud to announce the fourth weekly line-up of its new global series, SEGAL TALKS. New York, US, and international theatre artists, curators, researchers and academics will talk daily for one hour with Segal Center’s director, Frank Hentschker, about life and art in the Time of Corona and speak about challenges, sorrows, and hopes for the new Weltzustand— the State of the World. The Segal Center is the only theatre institution in New York City and the US creating original programming every day during the week.
