Reading Children’s Literature: A Critical Introduction
(Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2013)
Informed by recent scholarship and theory, this compact core text surveys the history of childhood and children’s literature, examines key genres (from fairy tales and picture books to domesticity and adventure to works of nonfiction, history, realism, and fantasy) and explores topics of current and lasting interest (race and ethnicity, genders and sexualities, censorship and selection). An illustrated supplement to the individual literary works assigned, it incorporates models for critical reading, end-of-chapter questions and activities, and sample lesson plans for future teachers. The book also includes an discussion of children’s book illustration by artist and designer Scott McKowen. Carrie Hintz (Assoc. Prof., Queens) serves on the doctoral faculty in English.
