Faculty Book: Magdalena Perkowska

Magdalena Perkowska

Pliegues visuales: Narrativa y fotografía en la novela
(Iberoamericana/Vervuert, 2013)
The book explores a body of novels published in Latin America at the end of the 1980s that combine a fictional narrative with photographs. The author argues that in fotonovelas, it is not simply a case of photos illustrating text or the text describing the photos. Rather, the presence of the photographs interrupts the narrative flow and creates a kind of crease that reveals discursive tensions and semantic complexity. Seen in this way, the fotonovela is not merely a place of formal encounter between two mediums, but a cultural object that articulates the social and historical discourse of a Latin America situated between the end of one century and the beginning of another. In Spanish. Magdalena Perkowska (Assoc. Prof., Hunter) serves on the doctoral faculty in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian literatures and languages.
