Thomas Kurtzman Honored by American Chemical Society

Assistant Professor Thomas Kurtzman (GC/Lehman, Chemistry) has won a Spring 2017 OpenEye Outstanding Junior Faculty Award from the Computational Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). 

Kurtzman says that much of his research is based on “some very elegant statistical mechanical theory” primarily developed by Professor Themis Lazaridis (City College, Chemistry).

He adds, “I ran with this theory with regards to applications in drug discovery and it ended up having a significant impact in the pharmaceutical industry."

Kurtzman and his team of researchers are focused on developing computational tools that can assist early stage drug discovery and design. His group’s approach involves applying statistical mechanical theory and computer simulations to better understand the physical principles that govern the molecular recognition between proteins and small molecule drugs. He is especially interested in the role that water plays in this recognition process. 

In addition to receiving an unrestricted monetary prize, Kurtzman will present a poster outlining his research program, "Accounting for Water in Early Stage Drug Discovery and Design,” at a special session for award winners at the ACS national meeting on April 4, 2017, in San Francisco.
