- NYT Launches New Site with Study Produced by LIS Team
The New York Times has launched a new feature, The Upshot, with an extensive report, “Losing the Lead,” produced by a team from the Graduate Center’s Luxembourg Income Study Center. The NYT-LIS study deals with the distribution and growth of household income across countries and found that the U.S. middle class is no longer the world's most affluent.
The team—LIS director Janet Gornick, professor of political science and sociology at the GC, operations director Thierry Kruten, and senior scholar Branko Milanovic—produced an entirely new set of results, drawing on 164 LIS datasets from twenty-three countries, covering the period 1979 to 2010.
The NYT site includes additional information about the data and a note on the process that led them to LIS. Further explanation of the data can be found at LIS, including an Excel file with the detailed results underlying the study.
