Multiple Honors for Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty and Students

Several faculty and students in the GC’s Earth and Environmental Sciences Program recently received prestigious grants and other honors:

Professor Sunil Bhaskaran was named director of the recently launched Geospatial Center at Bronx Community College (BCC) in collaboration with the CUNY-CREST Institute.  The Center was awarded a major grant from the CUNY Workforce Development Initiative.

Professor Cindi Katz received the James Blaut Memorial Award from the Socialist and Critical Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers for her “ongoing work as a scholar-teacher-activist toward social justice.”

Professor Johnny Luo received a NASA Group Achievement Award for “outstanding accomplishments in Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS).” SEAC4RS is the airborne field campaign in which Luo serves as one of 12 science leaders, and for which he flies into hurricanes in a small plane to assess the composition of the atmosphere.

Ph.D. candidate Hector Agredano received an NSF DDRI Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant for 2015-16.

Ph.D. candidate Mark J. Dempsey (left) published his first research article,Forecasting Strategies for Haboobs: An Underreported Weather Phenomenon,” in Advances in Meteorology.

Ph.D. candidate Robert (Hunter) Jackson received a 2014-15 short-term fellowship from the Frances S. Summersell Center for the Study of the South and the University of Alabama Libraries.

Ph.D. candidate Elizabeth Sibilia (right) received a 2014-15 American Institute of Bangladesh Studies Fellowship and a 2014-15 Human Geography Small Grants Award.

Ph.D. candidate Anne Marie Spencer received a 2014-15 Human Geography Small Grants Award.
