Michael Jacobson Quoted in NY Post

Michael Jacobson was recently quoted in a New York Post article titled "How to fix America’s mass incarceration problem."

"Then came the 1980s, the War on Drugs and a cadre of tough-on-crime politicians on both sides rewriting sentencing laws at the state and federal level.

“If you go back 40 years, crime wasn’t really a political issue,” said Michael Jacobson, the former New York City Correction Commissioner who is now executive director for the City University of New York’s Institute for State and Local Governance.

“Then you had the urban riots of the ’60s and the drug issue and both parties realized you could make incredible political capital by being tough on crime,” he adds. “So there was a long time where the attitude was, ‘You got a three strikes law? Okay, how about a two strikes law?’ ”"
