Parthenon Art is Coming

Frieze from the Parthenon (Galloping Horsemen XXIX)We are thrilled to announce that on Friday, August 4, casts of the Frieze of the Parthenon, often referred to as the Elgin Marbles, will be installed in the Graduate Center lobby and Mina Rees Library.

The casts, which were made in 1830s, were a gift to the City College of New York in 1852 from Charles M. Leupp, Esq. and were one of the first sets of Parthenon marble casts to come to the United States.

Installation on August 4, 2017

The casts will be mounted above the security desk in the library and continue along the first floor wall parallel to 34th Street. The installation work will involve some heavy lifting equipment, scaffolding, drilling, and bracing.

Read more about the installation and the casts on the library’s blog.
