Special Education’s Hidden Racial Gap

Michelle Fine, a professor of psychology at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, said the problem is much deeper than an information gap. Racism and a lack of cultural competency often pervade meetings between school officials and parents and make it difficult for black and brown families to get what they need for their children, she said.
