Two women have been awarded the 2018 Nobel prize for science, but the 55-hiatus in a woman receiving this award and a recent disturbing speech at CERN show an relentless lack of gender equality in STEM, writes professor of linguistics Virginia Valian in a Nature opinion piece.
 
Valian's latest book is Inclusive Academy, which she co-authored with Abigail Stewart (University of Michigan).
