David Hershinow is joining The Graduate Center as the inaugural director of the new Writing Center, which provides personal writing consultations, workshops, and companionable writing sessions to students.

Hershinow previously directed the Johns Hopkins Writing Center and was a faculty member of the Princeton Writing Program, and recently served as a visiting assistant professor of English at CUNY’s Baruch College.

“I’m excited to bring my experience to bear on the development of our new Writing Center, one of the few writing centers in the country whose mission caters solely to the needs of graduate students,” Hershinow said. “As director, I'll be working to expand our program offerings in ways that serve the needs of M.A. students, Ph.D. students, and international students at every degree level.”

Events offered by the Writing Center this fall include the Returning to Academic Writing Workshop on September 17, the Writing Goals Workshop on September 24, and the Writing a Conference Abstract Workshop on October 23. The full schedule is available on the Office of Career Planning & Professional Development’s events page.

Hershinow is planning a roundtable in the spring that will gather distinguished Graduate Center faculty from across the disciplinary spectrum who will reflect on their own writing struggles, despite being prolific and well respected scholars. In the next few years, he hopes to see the Writing Center become not only a valued service within the context of The Graduate Center, but also a model of innovation and success that future graduate writing centers throughout the country will choose to emulate.

In addition to his work in writing instruction, Hershinow is a researcher who specializes in Shakespeare, early modern literature and culture, intellectual history, and literary theory. He is the author of the forthcoming Shakespeare and the Truth-Teller: Confronting the Cynic Ideal.
