- Nation Magazine Praises "Raising Expectations" by Jane McAlevey, Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology
After more than twenty years as an organizer in labor and environmental justice movements, Ph.D. candidate Jane McAlevey (Sociology) has a lot to say about what it will take to renew the labor movement in the United States: primarily, engaging and educating workers, a task for which there are no shortcuts.
She recently published a book, Raising Expectations (and Raising Hell): My Decade Fighting for the Labor Movement (Verso), that the Nation named Most Valuable Book of 2012. McAlevey has also written four pieces for the Nation, most recently a coauthored essay on “Lessons from Wisconsin.” Her media appearances include the Leonard Lopate show on WNYC, the Laura Flanders Show, and MSNBC’s Up with Chris Hayes, in December.
Raising Expectations details her work organizing for the AFL-CIO and leading a Nevada chapter of the health care union SEIU. She wrote the memoir, she says, “because I think it’s filled with lessons about how we actually can build a more effective movement.” And now is the time, as she said in an interview with AlterNet: “People are so ready for a fight in this country.”
