- DPT Student Wins Bronze Medal at Weightlifting Championship
Beth Terranova, a first-year student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Hunter College, competed as a 53 kg (116.8 lb) lifter in the National University Weightlifting Championships, which was hosted on April 6 by East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee. Representing CUNY, she lifted 57 kgs (126 lbs) in the Snatch event, placing third and winning the Bronze medal; lifted 66 kgs (145.5 bls)in the Clean and Jerk event, placing fourth; and placed fourth overall for lifting a total of 123 kgs (271 lbs). The "Snatch" and the "Clean and Jerk" refer to types of lifts; the former requires a wide grip on the bars and a lift of the weights in one motion from the floor to an overhead position; the latter allows a lift to the shoulders before raising the weights to an overhead position. Ms. Terranova, who began weightlifting six years ago, said she was “very proud to represent CUNY” and “hopes this inspires some students to try Olympic-style weightlifting.” She is also excited at the prospect of creating a CUNY team for the 2014 competition.
