Rotating Resonator Creates a One-Way Street for Light

An international team under the direction of Andrea Al├╣, GC/CUNY Einstein Professor of Physics and director of the Photonics Initiative at the ASRC, has created an optical device that uses mechanical rotation to allow light to emanate in one direction along a fibre, but not in the opposite direction. The device could find use in optical circuits, where it is very difficult to prevent light from propagating in unwanted directions.
