André Aciman Confronts Exile and Desire

Distinguished Professor André Aciman (Comparative Literature and French) speaks at length with The Forward about his life and his books, including Call Me by Your Name (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2007) and Out of Egypt (Picador, 2007). He says about leaving Egypt at age 14, “I realized that I’ve always hated Egypt, I never liked it." The reporter writes, "Still, the experience of living in and leaving a multinational community that has long since ceased to exist has shaped him as an artist."
