The City University of New York Graduate Center announces the following public programs to be held during the month of January at The Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street.

The Inaugural Meeting of the Athanasius Kircher Society
An Evening of Wonders, Curiosities, and Esoterica

(multidisciplinary presentation) 7 pm

The popular website, the “Proceedings of the Athanasius Kircher Society,” named after a 17th-century polymath, inspired this evening of the wondrous and the arcane. Presented in the Science & the Arts series, this evening features ancient automata, extinct languages, curious inventions, and one notable savant. $12, for reservations call 212-817-8215.

A Concert of Middle Eastern Music
Tarab Ensemble

The Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center presents this concert by the Tarab Ensemble. Founded in 1998, Tarab focuses on studying and performing the classical Arabic repertoire, both instrumental and vocal, with special emphasis on the Andalusi Muwashah and Sufi repertoire. The ensemble also explores traditional folk music from various regions of the Arab world. Tarab has performed at venues such as Symphony Space, The Great Hall at Cooper Union, The Public Theater, Bowery Ballroom, and The Balkan Music Festival. $10, for information call 212-817-7570.
