Two doctoral candidates in English have debut poetry collections. Matthew J. Burgess’s book Slippers for Elsewhere was published by UpSet Press in January 2014. Burgess, who received an M.A. in Philosophy from the Graduate Center in 2012, is a lecturer at Brooklyn College. Alison Powell’s On the Desire to Levitate, due out in March from Ohio University Press, won the 2013 Hollis Summers Poetry Prize. Powell received a GC fellowship in 2013–14 for her dissertation, “Play Anxiety and Ethical Sensibility in the Romantic Poets.”
