‘Connected Conversation’ with Ph.D. Candidate Amanda Licastro (English)

Amanda LicastroDoctoral candidate Amanda Licastro (English) offers tips for language and literature Ph.D. students as part of a new Mellon-funded project for the Mellon Language Association.

In the inaugural student video for “Connected Conversations,” Licastro discusses alternative academic careers, the necessity of hands-on work experience, and the specific skills sought by employers at large.

“As I’ve found in the job market, [digital] skills are in really high demand,” says Licastro, who completed the GC’s Interactive Technology and Pedagogy Certificate Program. “These skills are vital now in higher education, but also translate outside of academia, which is why maybe we should incorporate them more into our graduate education programs.”

Licastro currently serves as Assistant Professor of Digital Rhetoric at Stevenson University in Maryland. She is also an instructor at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

Her past roles have included Instructional Technology Fellow through the Macaulay Honors College, co-director of the CUNY Digital Humanities Initiative, and co-chair of the GC Composition & Rhetoric Group.

She began her career at CUNY as a graduate teaching fellow at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. 

Licastro’s research focuses on the relationship between technology and writing, which she said led her to apply digital humanities methods to the questions raised by composition and rhetoric theory. Her general research interests also include textual studies, new media, and post-humanism.
