Six GC Students Receive Fulbright Awards for Upcoming Academic Year

Six GC graduate students students have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for the 2017-2018 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Fulbright Program grants provide funding to U.S. students, artists, and early career professionals to study, teach English, and conduct research around the world.
 
“The depth and range of our students’ research reflect not just extraordinary scholarship, but also a commitment to engaged citizenship — the very hallmark of the Fulbright,” said Provost and Senior Vice President Joy Connolly. “Their achievements inspire all of us at the Graduate Center, as well as the nearly 200,000 undergraduates taught by our doctoral students every year. We couldn’t be prouder to be so well represented among this year’s recipients, and we congratulate all of the winners on this spectacular honor.”

The GC recipients are:

  • Jessie Fredlund (Ph.D., Anthropology), who will travel to Tanzania to examine spirit-based rainmaking practices and religious change in the context of global climate change
 
  • Chelsea Haines (Ph.D., Art History), who will conduct research in Israel where she will further explore the intersecting relationship between art and nation-building during the first two decades of Israel’s history
 
  • Abigail Lapin (Ph.D., Art History), who will travel to Brazil to examine why and how art and exhibitions within and outside Brazil came to shape new notions of Afro-Brazilian identity from 1962 to 1988
 
  • Stephanie Huber (Ph.D., Art History), who will travel to the Netherlands where she will study a number of Dutch figurative painters working in the style of Neorealism between the world wars and during the German occupation
 
  • Tyler Olsen (M.A., Political Science), who will research a statewide participatory budgeting process in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
 
  • Destry Sibley (M.A., Liberal Studies Program), who will carry out her research project in Mexico, developing an audio series and Web site that portrays the story of Los NiƱos de Morelia — a group of children who fled the Spanish Civil War as refugees and exiles, landed in Mexico, and grew into adulthood
