Policy, Oversight and Administration (POA) students are required to defend original research, in the form of a dissertation, in order to complete their PhD. This involves assembling a dissertation committee, and under their supervision, conducting the study and writing up the dissertation results.
Dissertation committees have five members, three program faculty and two external faculty members. A list of eligible faculty can be found on the Faculty page. External faculty are those faculty from outside the program and/or outside of John Jay College’s program. External faculty provide feedback through the dissertation proposal state, while the graduate faculty are involved both in the proposal and final defense of the dissertation.
Students must submit an application, and obtain approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), prior to conducting research with human subjects for their dissertation research.
