For students entering with MA degree


Year I: 

Complete Literature course sequence in your Major Field (two 5-credit courses)
Complete Seminar course sequence (two 5-credit courses)
Complete up to two electives (3 credits each)
Pass First (written) Examination in Major Field
Select Minor Field

Year II:

Secure permission from Executive Officer for transfer of MA credits
Take electives or independent studies 
Complete requirements for Minor Field
Pass language examination
Begin Orals preparation by selecting committee
Choose dissertation topic

Year III:

Pass Oral Examination in Major and Minor fields
Pass Dissertation Proposal defense
 

Year IV:

Dissertation research and writing
Dissertation defense
 


For students entering without MA degree


Year I: 

Complete Literature course sequence in your Major Field (two 5-credit courses)
Complete Seminar course sequence (two 5-credit courses)
Complete up to two electives (3 credits each)
Pass First (written) Examination in Major Field

Year II:

Take electives or independent studies
