Andrew Kirby will present:
Applying NLP techniques to financial news texts for stock prediction

Abstract: Is it possible to make predictions on a stock based on NLP analyses of text in financial news articles? This thesis aims to create a tool which will conduct such an analysis using NER techniques, sentiment analysis, a subjectivity/objectivity measure, and more metrics to make such a prediction. The training dataset comes from Bloomberg and Reuters articles from 2006-2016. This tool aims to provide an open-source solution for users who otherwise would not have access to such information or analytic techniques. While most tools that perform similar functions only use headlines and sub-headlines, this tool uses text from within an article as its object for analysis.
