Admissions: Prospective Students

Thank you for your interest in the Ph.D. Program in Psychology at The Graduate Center, CUNY. We have ten different areas of study, and prospective students may only apply to one area of study at a time within a current admissions cycle.

2021 Standardized Testing Update
Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on GRE testing, the Ph.D. Program in Psychology is suspending all GRE requirements for Fall 2021 applications.

If you have already taken the exam, you may upload your scores as usual.

TOEFL and IELTS requirements are not suspended.

For further details, please refer to the latest updates from The Graduate Center's Office of Admissions, and the Application Deadlines & Requirements website.

Important Note Regarding the General GRE
As you are aware, graduate programs are debating the use and appropriateness of the General GRE for graduate admissions. At The Graduate Center, CUNY, the General GRE is required as an element of the application in Psychology, for now. All applicants MUST submit their General GRE score report to complete their applications, along with other admissions requirements. However, a number of Training Areas within Psychology have decided that they will NOT factor the GRE into graduate admissions decisions making. Those programs include:

  1. Basic and Applied Social Psychology
  2. Critical Social/Personality and Environmental Psychology
  3. Developmental Psychology
  4. Health Psychology & Clinical Science

Please contact the Training Area Head or Admissions Chair for the area of study you are interested in for further details, and for additional area specific application requirements. A list of contacts is available here.
