Mission Statement/Training Philosophy
The integrated doctoral training program provided by the CUNY Neuroscience Collaborative takes as its domain the organization and function of the nervous system at all levels, from its molecular, cellular and genetic foundation to its expression in behavioral and cognitive processes. The Program provides both broad and individualized, focused training to a selected group of doctoral students from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds, including, but not restricted to, biology and psychology. These students will have scholarly and research interactions with a distinguished faculty, utilizing a wide range of research methods and including studies of neuronal function at levels from the analysis of membrane channel mechanisms, through the genetic control of development, to the study of sensory, motor, neuroendocrine, motivational and cognitive systems. Training in neuroscience research utilizes the broad range and diversity of methods that characterizes contemporary neuroscience from genetic manipulations, through single-unit electrophysiology, to behavioral control and measurement and to neural imaging. The curriculum is interdisciplinary, taught by faculty from both Biology and Psychology and will provide a strong, common foundation in molecular, cellular, systems, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience. Students will also be introduced to current developments in Translational Neuroscience: the application of basic research findings to the study of behavioral and mental disorders.
Under the guidance of the student’s Advisory Committee, doctoral training will combine intensive research experience, basic and specialized courses and neuroscience seminars. Students will have the chance to interact with distinguished neuroscientists in regular Neuroscience Colloquia. A unique feature of the training program is the development of an individualized, interdisciplinary training plan for each student, designed to reflect their specific research interests and provide the skills and knowledge required for completion of the Dissertation and entry into a rewarding professional career.
