The “Women’s Work” of the Pandemic

Professor Margaret M. Chin is quoted in an article in Vox on how women are shouldering the burden of pandemic preparedness.

“Whenever there’s an emergency in the United States, women have always been called to make or create things,” Chin told Vox.

She also added that female garmet workers are on the front lines of the pandemic in many ways, leaving their homes daily to make essential goods. But garment work in America is overwhelmingly low-wage work.

Professor Chin is associate professor of sociology at Hunter College and The Graduate Center and is a faculty member of the International Migration Studies program at The Graduate Center, CUNY.
