David Bowie’s last album and video were remarkable meditations on his own death. His aestheticized reflections on his final moments find a surprising parallel in John Donne, who gave his famous “Death’s Duel” sermon in 1630, during his final illness. Exploring the “performance” of death by two disparate artists, this discussion features Julie A. Crawford (Columbia), Simon Critchley (New School), Vivien Goldman (NYU), and Feisal G. Mohamed and Stephen Spencer (Graduate Center).
