Talal Asad, a Distinguished Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center discusses how satire’s claim to freedom of the speech can sometimes backfire as in the 2005 Danish cartoon affair. “The conflict that many Euro-Americans saw in the Danish cartoons scandal was between the West and Islam, each championing opposing values: democracy, secularism, liberty, and reason (versus) … tyranny, religion, authority and violence,” said Asad in his “Free Speech, Blasphemy and Secular Criticism” paper delivered at University of California, Berkeley.
