Graduate Center Statement on Saira Rafiee

New York, Feb. 4, 2017 – The following statement is attributable to Lori Duggan Gold, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs at the Graduate Center, CUNY:

As a result of the combined efforts of our community, an extraordinary sequence of last-minute court decisions, and the tenacity of our student, we have received confirmation that Saira Rafiee has been granted re-entry to the United States and will soon be returning to the Graduate Center. Our Vice President for Student Affairs was at Boston's Logan airport to greet her.

We are extremely grateful that our efforts to connect Ms. Rafiee with legal assistance were successful and that her re-entry went expeditiously and without the need for additional legal intervention.

While the executive order's long-term repercussions on the academy remain cause for concern, today we take a brief moment to celebrate and very much look forward to welcoming Ms. Rafiee back to campus.

We extend our deep thanks to our partners at Citizenship Now!, especially Allan Wernick; our Political Science faculty and staff; and the entire Graduate Center community for their invaluable help, advocacy, and concern.

A message from President Chase Robinson can be found here.
