The Graduate Center Announces Fulbright Awards for 2017–2018
NEW YORK CITY, May 3, 2017—The Graduate Center of the City University of New York is pleased to announce that six graduate students have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for the 2017–2018 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
The finalists are:
Jessie Fredlund, a Ph.D. student in anthropology, who will travel to Tanzania to examine spirit-based rainmaking practices and religious change in the context global climate change;
Chelsea Haines, a Ph.D. student in art history, who will conduct research in Israel where she will further explore the intersecting relationship between art and nation-building during the first two decades of Israel’s history;
Abigail Lapin, a Ph.D. student in art history, who will travel to Brazil to examine why and how art and exhibitions within and outside Brazil came to shape new notions of Afro-Brazilian identity from 1962 to 1988;
Stephanie Huber, a Ph.D. student also in art history, who will travel to the Netherlands where she will study a number of Dutch figurative painters working in the style of Neorealism between the world wars and during the German occupation;
Tyler Olsen, a masters student in political science, who will research a statewide participatory budgeting process in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; and
Destry Sibley, a student in the data visualization track of the M.A. in Liberal Studies Program, who will carry out her research project in Mexico, developing an audio series and Web site that portrays the story of Los Niños de Morelia — a group of children who fled the Spanish Civil War as refugees and exiles, landed in Mexico, and grew into adulthood.
“The depth and range of our students’ research reflect not just extraordinary scholarship, but also a commitment to engaged citizenship — the very hallmark of the Fulbright,” said Provost and Senior Vice President Joy Connolly. “Their achievements inspire all of us at the Graduate Center, as well as the nearly 200,000 undergraduates taught by our doctoral students every year. We couldn’t be prouder to be so well represented among this year’s recipients, and we congratulate all of the winners on this spectacular honor.”
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered at the Graduate Center by the office of the Fulbright Program Adviser.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 370,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Over 1,900 U.S. students, artists, and early career professionals in more than 100 different fields of study are offered Fulbright Program grants to study, teach English, and conduct research annually in over 140 countries throughout the world.
The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation by the United States Congress to the U.S. Department of State and managed by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations in foreign countries and in the United States also provide direct and indirect support.
In the United States, the Institute of International Education administers and coordinates activities relevant to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, including conducting an annual competition for the scholarships.
