Welcome Dr. James Muyskens, Our Next Interim President

Office of the President

Dear Graduate Center colleagues,
As you may know, CUNY has announced Chancellor Matos Rodríguez’s appointment of Dr. James Muyskens as The Graduate Center’s next interim president, pending the formal approval of the CUNY Board of Trustees on May 7. It is my pleasure to invite you to join me in welcoming Dr. Muyskens to his new role.
In selecting Dr. Muyskens, Chancellor Matos Rodríguez has chosen an experienced academic leader to serve our dynamic, scholarly community. Having met him, I know he will be an ideal steward while the chancellery prepares for the national search for a permanent president.
Dr. Muyskens knows The Graduate Center well, having taught here as a University Professor of philosophy. He also knows CUNY extremely well. He served as president of Queens College for 12 years and, prior to that, he had a 16-year tenure at Hunter College, where he rose from program director to associate and then acting provost.
You can read more about his impressive credentials in CUNY’s press release.
I will be meeting with Dr. Muyskens over the coming months to ensure a seamless transition. He is eager to get to know more Graduate Center colleagues, and he will be meeting with many members of our community before he begins his appointment.
I look forward to continuing to serve The Graduate Center through June. We have many important initiatives underway, including the vital work of our Middle States Reaccreditation Steering Committee. We also have a wonderful commencement ceremony planned for May 31st to celebrate the tremendous accomplishments of our master’s and doctoral graduates.
The Graduate Center is a remarkable school. I feel extremely fortunate to lead it and to collaborate with so many treasured colleagues to ensure its continued success during Dr. Muyskens’ tenure as interim president.
Joy Connolly
