Message from the Provost: Fall Classes
- Message from the Provost: Fall Classes
Dear Graduate Center Students, Faculty, and Staff,
I write today to inform you of our plans for delivering fall 2020 courses. In accordance with CUNY policy and guidance [cuny.edu], all classroom instruction will be remote for the fall.
I wish, like many of you, that we could bring students and faculty together in person this fall. But with the present state of the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe that offering remote instruction is the course we must take to safeguard the health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.
Our faculty and our graduate students teaching at the colleges got an abrupt introduction to online teaching in the spring, but they learned quickly and are ready to offer a rich set of courses. Doctoral and master’s programs are geared up to provide a full agenda of speakers and professional development activities via Zoom.
We know that this decision has significant ramifications for our students, particularly our incoming international students to whom we wrote separately. Unfortunately, due to federal regulations, newly admitted international students will not be permitted to come to the U.S. to take all online classes. They may, however, take their Graduate Center courses online from their home countries and receive their tuition fellowships. There is a detailed FAQ for new international students on our website.
Students will receive more detailed information about the fall semester in the coming days, and the Provost’s Office and the Office of Student Affairs are prepared to answer students’ questions regarding the fall semester.
During this period of remote instruction, The Graduate Center remains open and as dedicated as ever to serving our students through world-class instruction and research support. Our new environment presents new opportunities. It also poses new challenges, and we are devoted to addressing them in order to deliver the outstanding experience our students deserve.
