Message from President Robin L. Garrell on Chauvin Trial Verdict

Office of the President

Dear Graduate Center community,
George Floyd’s death shocked the nation. It was tragic and needless.  His death and the deaths of too many others have catalyzed a broader recognition of the persistent inequities experienced by Black Americans, and of the very real dangers of racism and police brutality.
The guilty verdict in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin holds him accountable, yet it represents just one step toward justice.
The Graduate Center has a long history of fighting for racial equality.  We stand against the abuse of power by anyone, particularly by those who are responsible for protecting lives.
As an institution of higher learning, we have a responsibility to promote truth-seeking, equality, and justice through scholarship, courageous speech, and bold action.  I am heartened by the tireless efforts of our community to make meaningful and lasting change. We must continue this important work to realize the true promise of America: one nation, with liberty and justice for all.
Robin L. Garrell
