Building Entry Policy

As of August 16, 2021, anyone entering a CUNY facility for any reason will need to be fully vaccinated (defined as 14 days beyond the last vaccination shot) or under certain circumstances, show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken at a CUNY testing site within the past seven days.

Per New York State and CUNY policy, students must be fully vaccinated to attend in-person or hybrid classes and to access campus for any reason unless granted an exception or medical exemption. Students who are vaccinated are to upload verification of their vaccination status into their CUNYfirst account no later than September 27, 2021.

As of September 3, students accessing University facilities for reasons other than to attend an on-campus class session will also be required to be vaccinated. Only if they have been granted a religious exception or a medical exemption, they can show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 7 days prior to the visit.

Faculty, staff, and students with verified proof of vaccination status will use the CUNY Access Pass in Cleared4 to enter campus as of Monday September 27, 2021. Employees and students are advised to pull up their Access Pass before entering the Graduate Center and present their GC ID to sign in at the front desk.

Please follow the steps outlined below to set up your Cleared4 profile and retrieve your Access Pass.

Your Access Pass has your name, date, and your QR code, which is tied to your profile. You can print this page out, or pull it up on your phone upon entry to a CUNY location.

Please see CUNY Access – Cleared4 Guide for Vaccinated CUNY Students, Faculty and Staff on the CUNY IT Help page for detailed information on setting up and using the Cleared4 Access Pass.

Cleared4 FAQs are available on the CUNY IT Help page as well.

For questions regarding vaccine status and Cleared4, employees can reach out to the Office of Human Resources at hr@gc.cuny.edu. Students with questions about their vaccine status can contact our campus location vaccine authority (LVA) liaisons at lva@gc.cuny.edu. The #CantStopCUNY website also has entry policy information.

Employees and students who have not provided proof of vaccination or whose vaccination records have not yet been approved should continue to follow the routine testing program through Cleared4.

We encourage everyone to get vaccinated. For those who are not, CUNY has retained Applied DNA Clinical Labs LLC (ADCL) to provide COVID-19 testing on campus. Tests are available to students and employees at no cost. In addition to the site located at the Graduate Center on the first floor, there are 19 other testing sites at locations across CUNY.

If you have not submitted vaccination documentation through CUNYFirst, you will be enrolled in the mandatory testing program and will receive an email from the Cleared4 system inviting you to the “safeCircle” testing program. Please check all email addresses included in your CUNYFirst profile and your spam folders. The message comes from a “no-reply” email address with the subject line: “Welcome to safeCircle at CUNY.” This email contains your personal invitation link to make a testing appointment at any of the 20 CUNY testing sites, including the Graduate Center or another site that is convenient for you. Appointment scheduling, test results, and other communications will flow through the Cleared4 platform. ADCL uses a PCR test with a nasal swab that is less invasive than the longer-stemmed swabs used elsewhere, but that is still highly sensitive and designed to detect the virus before a person becomes symptomatic and can begin spreading it.

Test results are processed within 24 hours for appointments Monday through Thursday (48-72 hours for Friday appointments and over the weekend). Test results are sent via email.

Systematic testing helps to identify unknown cases so that measures can be taken to prevent further transmission. Unless things change, fully vaccinated individuals with no COVID-19-like symptoms and no known exposure will be exempted from routine screening testing programs.

For more details of CUNY’s testing program read the recent letter from the Chancellor or review the Testing FAQ.

Masking (Face Coverings):
Following the July 27, 2021 CDC Recommendations, wearing masks (face coverings), regardless of vaccination status, when in the GC is expected except when an individual is alone in a segregated space, such as working in a private office or seating in a partitioned cubicle at least 6’ from another individual.

Any unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks in all spaces while on campus.

Masks are available to those who need one upon entry.

All students, faculty, and staff coming to the GC or a CUNY campus must continue to monitor their health daily for symptoms of COVID-19. Regardless of your vaccination status, stay home if you are sick. This is true for COVID-19 and other viruses. If you’re unvaccinated; get tested if you have symptoms or were exposed to someone with COVID-19. If you’re vaccinated; get tested 3-5 days following a known exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and wear a mask in all indoor settings for 14 days after exposure or until a negative test result.

Students, faculty, and staff who experience symptoms, or become ill while on campus will have access to one of two isolation rooms located in the Wellness Center. Individuals may use these spaces to wait for transportation home or to a medical facility.

Graduate Center IDs
If you are a new student or a new hire since March 2020 and need a Graduate Center ID, please:

  1. Email security@gc.cuny.edu from your Graduate Center email address. Put “ID Card” as the subject.

  2. The email body must contain your name as it appears in CUNYFirst, your program and your mailing address.

  3. Attach a “passport type headshot” JPEG picture taken within the past six months. Public Safety and Mail Room staffing is limited at this time so there may be a delay in mailing them out. You can also make an appointment to come in to be issued an ID in person by emailing security@gc.cuny.edu from your Graduate Center email address to request a day and time.
