Training Program Overview

The CUNY Graduate Center is home to over 4,000 doctoral and masters students who work with faculty at the 13 senior CUNY colleges across all 5 boroughs of New York. They are a bright, dedicated, and diverse group, varying by race, ethnicity, SES, sexual orientation, gender identity, country of origin, and in many other ways.

Our Student Counseling Service, a part of our Wellness Center, provides these students with initial consultations, up to 12 sessions of short term individual or couples therapy, referrals for extended services, a wide array of groups, and workshops.

We are especially proud of our externship training program for doctoral students in clinical and counseling psychology. Externs provide these services under the supervision of our senior staff, composed of 4 psychologists, each with extensive experience in psychodynamic, CBT and other approaches. Our staff and training program have an integrative approach to treatment, working responsively with clients to tailor treatment to meet their individual needs.

We have a well-developed didactic seminar series that introduces externs to short term dynamic psychotherapy and to CBT, and covers many other important issues, including initial assessments, risk evaluations, working with diverse clients, working within the current socio-political climate, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, etc.

We place special value on creating a supportive learning community among our staff and externs, and we are careful to ensure that service needs do not crowd out the training needs of our externs. Externs work with their supervisors to develop a thoughtful training plan for the year, and we provide feedback on developing competencies midyear and toward the end of the externship.

Externs receive two hours of individual supervision, with additional supervision through case presentations at our weekly 2.5 hour seminar meetings. Students co-facilitating groups and workshops (usually together with senior staff members) have additional group supervision. Our externship is 16 hours weekly, and runs from the end of August through the following August. (When current externs start new externships or internships in July, we allow flexibility with summer scheduling so that all training needs are met.)

It means a lot to us that our externs consistently rate our program as one of the best they have experienced, providing a depth of training and support.
