Student News: Public Health

Several DPH students will present at the 2012 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in San Francisco, October 27-31. 
Sungwoo Lim (EPI, 2010 cohort), will give an oral presentation, “Strengthening causal inference using Optimal Full Matching: An Empirical Demonstration in a Program Evaluation” (Lim et al.). 
Michael Schmeltz (EOH, 2009 cohort) will present twice at APHA: at a poster session investigating food safety ("Lead contaminated soils: Are urban gardeners being exposed? A pilot study") and as part of the "Consumer Beware: Point of Sale Promotions in the United States" panel ("Tobacco product sales and advertisements at pharmacies in selected New York City neighborhoods: An observational study"). 
Nisha Beharie (CSH, 2009 cohort) and Lauren Dinour (CSH, 2007 cohort) will present the poster "Lessons learned from a student-led breastfeeding support initiative at a NYC academic institution."
Bill Cabin (HPM, 2011 cohort) will present his poster "Show Me the Money: The Relationship Between Home Care Ownership Status and Quality of Care."
Dana Watnick (CSH, 2010 cohort) has been selected for an oral presentation, "Examining social determinants of teen pregnancy risk behavior."

Bill Sothern (EOH, 2010 cohort) presented twice at this year’s American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition (AIHce) annual meeting in June, with "High Lead Levels Detected in Children’s Toys, Jewelry, and Hair Accessory Items Sold at Low-Priced Retailers" and "Changing Building Codes to Reduce the Prevalence of Mold Growth Problems."

Bill Cabin (HPM, 2011 cohort) received an invitation to act as a Consulting Editor for the Social Work Journal

Sonia Gonzalez (CSH, 2009 cohort) was awarded the National Development and Research Institutes, Inc., predoctoral fellowship. 

Nisha Beharie (CSH, 2009 cohort), Gabriela Betancourt (EPI, 2008 cohort), and Lauren Gordon (EOH, 2012 cohort) will receive the Public Health Traineeship Scholarship through the Health Research Services Administration (HRSA) for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Deborah Kaplan (CSH, 2007 cohort) recently appeared on CNN’s Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien to explain the city's new Latch on NYC program to promote breastfeeding in city hospitals.
