Pathways for Change: Philanthropy Among African American, Asian American, and Latino Donors in the New York Metropolitan Region
Felinda Mottino and Eugene D. Miller
Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society in Partnership with Coalition for New Philanthropy, 2005.

Description
Based on 166 interviews with donors of color in New York City, the volume explores donor aspirations and includes a section on donor engagement strategies. Overall the study found that donors of color give to community organizations and churches, and especially to educational programs and institutions. Giving to education was seen as creating pathways for change and the key to a more just society.

Audience and Uses
A central purpose of this study is to provide information to nonprofit organizations regarding ways they can more effectively partner with donors. Based on findings from the research, the authors offer detailed recommendations. Most notable are that appeals should be aware of generational differences; donors should be approached on many levels including philosophical, familial, and spiritual; and that nonprofit organizations should be clearly accountable for the use of the donations.

  • and addressing challenges in ethnic philanthropy

The Coalition for New Philanthropy

Employee Affinity Groups in Financial Firms

Employee Affinity Groups in Financial Firms
Donor Research Project, 2006.
A directory of employee affinity groups focusing on financial service companies in the New York metropolitan area.

Description
The volume includes an introduction and an overview of the field and makes the case that employee affinity groups are a burgeoning phenomenon with great philanthropic potential. Since 2000 the number of affinity groups has grown sharply and now includes Asian American, Latino, LGBT, and Native American groups. They are seen as having the potential to simultaneously meet corporate and employee objectives. In the sample under examination the total aggregated number of employees engaged in affinity groups may exceed 16,000. These employee networks point to a potential sizable, pooled and emergent source of philanthropic capital.

Uses
With the strong caveat that corporate culture is often protective of its employees, the directory can be of use to those who wish to explore new ways to educate often young, but potentially high income donors. The volume includes suggestion on how these groups may be approached.

Demographic Workbook 2004
The Demographic WorkBook examines selected variables in 21 counties in the New York metropolitan region for African Americans, Asian American and Latinos. The variables include population size, ancestry, educational attainment, home ownership, and income. Each variable is broken down at the county and then zip code levels. Comparisons are made between the 1990 and 2000 profiles. The overall objective is to provide a portrait of each of the three ethnic groups by county and to show zip code-level concentrations of population and indices of income and assets.
