Research Awards

All students in the M.S. Program in Cognitive Neuroscience are eligible to receive Research Awards to cover research expenses (e.g., EEG caps and gel, MRI scans, payment to human subjects), presentations at national or international conferences, research-related travel expenses, and/or lab expenses.

Contingent upon available funds, students may apply for Research Awards up to twice per academic year (fall and spring); however, they may only receive up to $3,000 per year. Students must submit Research Award Applications, to be reviewed and approved by the Committee on Admissions and Awards, to cogneuro@gc.cuny.edu (the application and deadlines will be provided via email and posted on this webpage):

Fall Deadline: October 1
Spring Deadline: March 1

If a student’s application is approved, the student must submit additional documentation, including, but not limited to, flyers, transportation tickets, quotes, purchase orders, and/or all receipts. If a student’s application is approved and the student is requesting an advance on travel funding, the student must submit a document that provides trip or research expense details (e.g., dates of travel, location of travel, etc.) no later than 3 weeks prior to the time at which the funds will be needed. For example, if a student plans fly to a conference on November 21, 2019, then the student must submit the documentation no later than October 31, 2019.

Students have up to 60 days to spend their awards, with the possibility of an extension upon extension request approval. Extensions are not guaranteed. Awards may be retroactively received. For example, if a student presents at a conference on February 5, then he or she may apply for reimbursements on March 1.

Students must immediately notify the M.S. Program in Cognitive Neuroscience at cogneuro@gc.cuny.edu if any part of their award application changes, including but not limited to

  • A change in mentor.
  • Changes to proposed experiment(s) and/or budget.
  • Remaining funds at the 60-day deadline.

*These awards may affect students' financial aid. (Before accepting these awards, students are encouraged to contact the Office of Financial Aid; moreover, international students must consult with the Office of International Students.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Within an academic year, there are two application deadlines. Every student is eligible to apply for Research Awards up to two times per academic year, regardless of prior funding, as long as the total requested funds remain under $3,000 (i.e., even if you receive an award in the fall semester, you can still apply for additional funds in the spring semester, and even if you received an award ). If you wish to apply twice in one year, you can either resubmit your first application proposal with any relevant changes or create an entirely new proposal if your needs have changed.

Students must submit Research Award Applications to the M.S. Program in Cognitive Neuroscience by the application deadline at cogneuro@gc.cuny.edu.

Contingent upon availability of funds and application success, there is a $3,000 limit per student per academic year. This amount may be divided into two (equal or unequal) portions per semester so long as the total requested funds remain under $3,000 (e.g., a student may request a $500 award in the fall and request a $1,000 award in the spring). Students may only apply for a Research Award for a maximum of two academic years.

No. You must submit applications for the fall and spring semester separately.

As long as the total requested funds per academic year remain under $3,000, every student is eligible to apply for Research Awards. However, approval of your fall Research Award Application does not guarantee approval of a new spring Research Award Application.

Yes, but students may only apply for a Research Award for a maximum of two academic years.

The Admissions and Awards Committee will review and approve Research Award Applications. Once decisions have been made, the program will notify students.

Yes. The spending and reimbursement deadline for each research award is 60 calendar days after notification of the award. Students can request extensions by submitting an extension request; however, extensions are not guaranteed.

If you do not spend all of the funds that you were awarded before the spending deadline, you must notify the program immediately by contacting the M.S. Program in Cognitive Neuroscience at cogneuro@gc.cuny.edu.

If approved, you may receive reimbursement so long as the expenses qualify and are part of the items specified in your research award application. Submit all receipts to cogneuro@gc.cuny.edu.

Yes, these awards can possibly affect your student loan capacity, as well as taxes. For more information, contact The Office of Financial Aid.

All students in the M.S. Program in Cognitive Neuroscience are eligible to receive these awards. However, international students must contact The Office of International Students prior to accepting any awards.

Students will be able to ask for funds to attend conferences, whether they are presenting or not, but preference is typically given to those who are presenting.
