The Grammy Award-winning group Ranky Tanky, rooted in South Carolina’s West-African Gullah community, has a sound described as “soulful honey to the ears” by NPR. Their release Good Time (a number one album on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart) combines songs carried down through generations in the Sea Islands with the band’s original compositions in the Gullah tradition. Preserving the music of African Americans of the coastal South during slavery, Ranky Tanky (the name a Gullah phrase for “get funky”) has been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air, The Today Show, PBS Newshour, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and at President Biden’s inauguration event.
