Joint Columbia/CUNY/NYU Number Theory Seminars
Spring 2022 Seminars
Unless otherwise noted, you must go to the seminar website for connecting information. Seminars are listed in the Seminar Bulletin in chronological order and show information for the current week and the following week’s seminars based on the information provided by the seminar organizer. Always check the seminar's website (if provided) or contact the seminar organizer for the most current information including updates and abstracts. Special Events, if any, are listed at the end.
Seminars are now listed as “Online” or “In Person” based on the information provided by the Seminar Organizer. Many seminars plan to alternate between “Online” and “In Person” during the semester so always make sure you know where the seminar is held. If a seminar is “In Person”, you must follow all the COVID related rules and guidelines to enter the building. All details are on the GC's COVID-19 page.
Some seminars do not meet every week. On Monday afternoon, we update the Seminar Bulletin for the current week and the following week’s seminars based on the information provided by the seminar organizer. Download the current Weekly Seminars Bulletin.
If you would like to sign up or change your email address to receive the weekly Seminar Bulletin, please visit our listserv. All other matters related to the seminars should be sent to mathseminars@gc.cuny.edu .

Upcoming Defenses
Name: Joseph Boninger
Defense Date: Tuesday, April 12, 2022
Location: 6495
Time: 1:15pm-3:15pm
Title: Thickened Surfaces, Checkerboard Surfaces, and the Jones Polynomial
Committee Chair: Ilya Kofman, The Graduate Center & College of Staten Island
Committee Member 2 : Abhijit Champanerkar, The Graduate Center & College of Staten Island
Committee Member 3: Josh Sussan, The Graduate Center & Medgar Evers College
Committee Member 4: Dennis Sullivan, The Graduate Center
Abstract: The Jones polynomial, a knot invariant, lies at the heart of three-dimensional quantum topology, but much is unknown about its topological and geometric meaning. In this defense we outline new approaches to two well-known conjectures dealing with the polynomial. The first, the Volume Conjecture, relates the Jones polynomial and hyperbolic geometry. The second, posed by Atiyah, asks for a construction of the Jones polynomial of a link using the topology of the link complement.
