Name: Owen Sweeney
Defense Date: Thursday, March 30, 2023
Location: 4214.03
Time: 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Title: On the second case of Fermat's last theorem over cyclotomic fields
Committee Chair: Victor Kolyvagin, The Graduate Center
Committee Member 2: Alexander Gamburd, The Graduate Center
Committee Member 3: Kenneth Kramer, The Graduate Center & Queens College
Committee Member 4:

Abstract: We obtain a new simpler sufficient condition for Kolyvagin's criteria, regarding the second case of fermat's last theorem with prime exponent p over the p-th cyclotomic field, to hold. It covers cases when the existing simpler sufficient conditions do not hold and is important for the theoretical study of the criteria.

Title: The geometric space of phylogenetic trees: Algorithms and Applications
Abstract: A phylogenetic tree represents the evolutionary history of a set of organisms, like marsupials or virus strains. Billera, Holmes, and Vogtmann defined a moduli space of metric trees to provide a natural geometric setting for analyzing phylogenetic tree data. This treespace is CAT, or non-positively curved, allowing algorithms to quickly compute distances and Frechet means. I will discuss both these algorithms and some recent applications of this space to problems in evolutionary biology.
