By pairing birds with a "vocal robot" partner, we show that male and female zebra finches can learn to socially coordinate the timing of their innate calls and that this ability relies on the same forebrain pathway that is known to underlie song learning in males. This study was done as part of GC Alum Jonathan Benichov's doctoral research for the Graduate Center's Neuroscience subprogram in Biology (Part of the CUNY Neuroscience Collaborative housed at the Graduate Center) with faculty advisor Ofer Tchernichovski.
