The Board of Directors for CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies of The City University of New York (CUNY) Is Seeking an Executive Director

As the first university-based LGBTQIA research center in the United States, CLAGS nurtures interdisciplinary, cutting-edge knowledge production in queer and trans studies. At CLAGS, we strive for an intersectional definition of queer and commit to merging issues of sexuality and gender with race, Indigeneity, class, disability, nationality, colonialism, environmental justice, and globalization. CLAGS is dedicated to maintaining a broad program of public events and online projects for examining and affirming LGBTQIA lives through accessible public programming, fellowships, and initiatives that join academics, artists, activists, policymakers, and community members in dialogue and conversation. We are committed to radical visions of a queer past, present, and future — within and beyond CUNY and on the national/global level.

Position Overview

The CLAGS executive director is recommended by the board and approved by the CUNY Graduate Center president. The position is open to all full-time faculty employed by The City University of New York. The executive director position is a three-year appointment (with the possibility of an additional three-year appointment), beginning June 2023.

Responsibilities

● Serve as an intellectual guide to CLAGS public programming
● Provide key support to CLAGS conferences
● Operate as a liaison between the board of directors and CUNY students and administration
● Manage center staff as well as graduate student interns, international students, and volunteers
● Act as a responsible financial administrator
● Build financial support for the organization both internally and through private fundraising
● Expand CLAGS’s general membership
● Communicate effectively and frequently with the board
● Serve as a spokesperson for CLAGS when necessary

Full-time faculty at The City University of New York

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who:

● Invest in facilitating connections both within academia and the broader community
● Deeply engage with the current field of LGBTQIA studies and are excited to help envision the future of both CLAGS and the field more broadly
● Support and encourage interdisciplinary approaches to LGBTQIA studies
● Bring experience working with nonprofits and/or grassroots organizing
● Contribute to the diversity of the organization

Compensation

In addition to three hours reassigned time per semester, the executive director position comes with a range of opportunities. The executive director will receive dedicated office space and access to resources at the CUNY Graduate Center. They will also have access to the extensive network of CLAGS contacts as well as frequent opportunities to meet some of the leading scholars and participate in conversations at the forefront of the field of LGBTQIA+ studies. The position carries a minimum of one course release in the CUNY system; additional course releases may be negotiated based on additional funds being procured.
