CUNY LATINO STUDIES PH.D. STUDENTS AND FACULTY ARE INVITED TO APPLY FOR CROSSING LATINIDADES FELLOWSHIPS AND PROGRAMS

December 8, 2021

CUNY is one of 16 members of a national consortium that includes all of the R1 (doctoral, research-intensive) universities in the U.S. that are also Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), currently 16 in number. The consortium, which is based at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), has received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for a new project: Crossing Latinidades: Emerging Scholars and New Comparative Directions. The broad goal of the project is to prepare, support, and mentor Latinx students who are pursuing doctoral degrees and faculty positions in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

This announcement describes two opportunities for CUNY doctoral students and faculty to participate in Crossing Latinidades.

  • Pre-candidacy doctoral students are invited to apply to participate in a two-week summer 2022 institute at UIC. If selected, students would also be considered for a follow-on $30,000 predoctoral fellowship. The CUNY deadline for applications is January 31, 2022.

  • Faculty are invited to apply for collaborative research fellowships.  The pre-proposal (optional) deadline is February 1, 2022, with the full proposal due on April 1, 2022.

Summer Institute and Fellowships for Ph.D. Students
Pre-candidacy CUNY doctoral students are invited to apply by January 31, 2022, for an in-person two-week Summer Institute on Latino Humanities Studies Methodologies and Theories. It will be held at the University of Illinois at Chicago June 26 through July 10, 2022, and bring together 2nd- and 3rd-year students who are currently enrolled in doctoral programs in the humanities and humanistic social sciences and who plan to work on Latino humanities studies dissertations. Through lectures, seminars, workshops, and presentations, the institute aims to expand students’ views of the Latino humanities studies field and ready them for intellectual innovation.

CUNY may select and nominate up to two students to participate in the 2022 summer institute. Lodging and some meals will be provided, and participants will receive a $3,000 stipend to cover additional expenses, including travel. Following the institute, participants will engage in a professionalization and mentorship program during the fall and spring semesters.

Institute participants will also be considered for a predoctoral research fellowship for 2022–23 (fall, spring, summer) that includes a $30,000 stipend, tuition and fee waiver, and health insurance at the home institution. This is an extra year of funding to any existing assistantship or fellowship funding commitment from CUNY. Students who are selected for the predoctoral research fellowships will be assigned to a collaborative Latino Humanities Studies research working group composed of faculty from a minimum of three universities in the Crossing Latinidades consortium.

Application process: For more information about the summer institute’s eligibility criteria, the application form, and submission process, please visit here. After screening for eligibility, applications will be reviewed by the Crossing Latinidades CUNY steering committee.
