Duncan Faherty Named Inaugural Director of the Early Research Initiative

Professor Duncan Faherty (GC/Queens, English/American Studies) has been named inaugural director of the Graduate Center's new Early Research Initiative (ERI), which will provide opportunities for doctoral students to do exploratory research early in their graduate careers.
 
The ERI will serve as a clearinghouse for early student-research opportunities both within and outside of the GC. Its goal is to help students gain a solid foundation for pursuing their dissertation research.

Faherty, whose research interests include early U.S. literature and culture, has already partnered with the New York Historical Society and the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture to create research internships and yearlong fellowship opportunities.

He also established a new partnership with the Social Science Research Council that will provide up to eight fellowships to GC students in the humanities and social sciences for the prestigious Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship Program.

"Our students will benefit greatly by the early research opportunities afforded to them through this effort," said Louise D. Lennihan, interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.

The ERI will also oversee the GC's current pre-dissertation competitions and awards, including the summer archival research awards, the Provost's summer research awards, and the Provost's Pre-Dissertation Development Fellowships.
