From dissertation fellowships to Fulbrights, here are some great opportunities to seek funding.

As the leaves turn and the weather cools, fall is also the perfect time for graduate students to apply for funding. Rachel Sponzo, the associate director of student research fellowships in the Provost’s Office, shared these grant and fellowship opportunities, which have been awarded to Graduate Center students in the past.

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad program funds doctoral students to conduct research in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. It funds dissertation research outside of the United States and Western Europe and is of particular interest to students in the social sciences and humanities. Deadline TBA, contact the Provost's Office for details.
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) offers several dissertation writing awards, including the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship for students in the Social Sciences and Humanities and the Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship in American Art. Several have fall deadlines, see them all here.
The Council for European Studies (CES) offers dissertation completion and pre-dissertation awards for doctoral students conducting research in European studies. The Graduate Center is a member of the CES Academic Consortium. The deadlines vary, starting in November.
The AAUW (American Association of University Women) offers fellowships for dissertation completion and post-doctoral research. Several have deadlines of November 1 or November 15.
The Institute for Citizens & Scholars (formerly the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation) offers Dissertation Completion Awards including the Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship.

- WW Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies– Deadline: October 14.
- MMUF Advancement Program – Deadline: December 1.
The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) offers dissertation research fellowships. Deadlines vary by award.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants fund doctoral research in a wide range of fields in the sciences and social sciences. Deadlines vary depending on the field. Check with Research and Sponsored Programs for more information.
