The Graduate Center, CUNY Launches New Nanoscience Master's Degree Program

NEW YORK, October 7, 2019 – The Graduate Center, CUNY has launched a new M.S. Program in Nanoscience. The interdisciplinary field focuses on understanding the chemical and physical properties of objects at the nanoscale and their emergent properties. It requires unique collaborations among chemists, physicists, and biologists who together advance understanding and innovation.
The new degree will prepare students to apply for doctoral programs in chemistry, physics, and materials sciences, as well as enter the workforce in nanoscience and its related energy, biomedical, electronics, telecommunications, and materials science fields.
“Nanoscience is one of the fastest growing areas of research, in part because of its interdisciplinary nature and ability to address a broad spectrum of areas and needs, from technology to health to the environment,” said Joshua Brumberg, dean for the sciences at The Graduate Center. “Students in our program will have the opportunity to prepare for this exciting field in state-of-the-art facilities like the ones at Advanced Science Research Center at The Graduate Center, CUNY.”
“We have brilliant and dedicated faculty in chemistry and physics conducting nanoscience research throughout CUNY,” said Julie Suk, dean for master’s programs and professor of sociology at The Graduate Center. “Promoting CUNY’s public mission, we will make training in advanced scientific research available to more students by offering the M.S. in nanoscience at The Graduate Center. It is one of very few master’s programs in the United States that enable students to work in nanotechnology and prepare them for the many jobs that require graduate-level research skills in this developing field.”
The new program will be based at The Graduate Center, but it will involve over 70 faculty from 20 different departments at 10 distinct CUNY campuses. It will couple a structured curriculum of required and elective coursework with nanoscience research opportunities in the laboratories of participating faculty, allowing students to gain substantive training in nanoscience theory and practice. The course of study will include classes in nanofabrication, nanoscale imaging, and surface analysis along with other areas of training.
The robust program offering is a result of several years of focused effort by CUNY to hire faculty with expertise in nanoscience at multiple campuses and to create a world-class team of researchers and educators for the CUNY ASRC Nanoscience Initiative. The research center is home to highly advanced facilities for nanofabrication and for imaging and analysis of materials and structures on the nanoscale.
