Graduate Center Faculty Available for Media Interviews on U.S. Government Resuming Diplomatic Relations with Cuba

New York, Dec. 17, 2014-The following Graduate Center, CUNY faculty are available for interviews with the media on the U.S. government resuming diplomatic relations with Cuba following a 52-year hiatus:

Laird Bergard is a Distinguished Professor of Latin American and Caribbean history in the Ph.D. program at the Graduate Center and Lehman College, City University of New York. He is also the director of the Center for Latin American, Caribbean & Latino Studies.  He has written two books on Cuba: Cuba Rural Society in the Nineteenth Century:  The Social and Economic History of Monoculture in Matanzas and The Cuban Slave Market, 1790-1880. Dr. Bergad was one of the first foreign scholars to be granted unrestricted access to Cuban historical archives during the early 1980s.

Sujatha Fernandes is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Graduate Center and Queens College, City University of New York. Her research combines social theory and political economy with in-depth, engaged ethnography of global social movements. Her first book, Cuba Represent! looks at the forms of cultural struggle that arose in post-Soviet Cuban society.
